Voyage is proud to be a delivery partner of R4NR which is an exciting new programme designed to kick start employment for young people from black communities in the environmental and conservation sector.

Voyage will be offering a bespoke mentoring service to the young people recruited by over 40 conservation charities and voluntary sector organisations. The mentoring will be lead by Duane Maddison supported by Shakara Mbandaka, Maxine Stephens and Neils Fossberry.

We will be working closely with Action for Conservation, Generation Success and SOS UK.

What is Race For Nature’s Recovery 

Race for Nature’s Recovery is a new employment initiative that’s pioneered by a group of environmental organisations and diversity recruitment champions. Our objective is to diversify the environmental sector and support the creation of new, fulfilling jobs for 16-24 years from predominantly BAME and other underrepresented backgrounds in UK environmental charities and organisations. 

We will also be supporting the host organisations to build their own capacity so they can better support these voices in their work. 

What are we trying to achieve with this initiative? 

We already have 35 organisations signed up to take part in the initial phase of this employment programme and together we’ve so far helped create 118 jobs that young people will be starting from this month onwards. That’s a great start and will enable us to begin making the cultural and organisational changes needed to improve diversity and create a more inclusive workforce in the UK’s environmental sector.

What are the challenges

we are driven by the harrowing stats around the initiative. e.g.

  • 118 young people will be supported into roles during the scheme over the coming months
  • We’re aiming to place 150 young people during 2021
  • 35 UK charities and organisations have already signed up and we hope to welcome others to the programme over the next year
  • RSPB, Friends of the Earth, ClientEarth, and ZSL London Zoo are just a few of the organisations already signed up to offer roles
  • We intend for over 50% of these placements to turn into full-time roles
  • Every role pays the Real Living Wage or above

  • The environmental sector has the second least diverse workforce of all UK sectors
  • Only 3.1% of professionals working in the environmental sector identify as minorities, compared to 19.9% of all occupations identify as minorities
